Tottenham explored signing Yannick Carrasco
Tottenham are among the clubs to have explored a move for Yannick Carrasco this month, like they have done with a number of players.
The Athletic understands Atletico Madrid’s view was there was no chance of a deal as it was too late in the window. They could consider a move in the summer but not at this stage.
Carrasco’s release clause activation date also expired in recent days, rendering a switch all but impossible.

Fulham unlikely to have any further arrivals, confident of retaining Carvalho
Knowing Fulham’s deadline day track record day in recent seasons, this may well turn into famous last words, but for now it is looking quiet on the incomings front at Fulham today.
Coach Marco Silva highlighted on Friday that any new arrivals would need to be improvements on the current squad, and that sets a high bar.
The focus looks set to be on outgoings, with Carvalho in particular taking centre stage. Fulham remain confident of keeping him until the end of the season. and Liverpool seem open to loaning him back should a transfer go through. Talks are ongoing. There could also be moves for one or two Fulham young players seeking loans before the window shuts.

Footballers’ medicals: Explained
The medical that takes place before a player signs for a new club is a fascinating subject to delve into and explore.
It is an integral part of a transfer but, in all likelihood, very few of us know much about the process, other than it is one of the last boxes to be ticked before a signing can be announced.
The Athletic‘s Stuart James investigates.

Brentford’s Charlie Goode set to join Sheffield United on loan
Sheffield United’s month-long search for a centre-half is set to culminate in the deadline day arrival on loan of Brentford’s Charlie Goode.
The 26-year-old, who has made six appearances in the Premier League this season, is understood to be undergoing a medical at Shirecliffe this morning.
Goode will provide competition in an area where United are thin on numbers, with just four senior centre-backs competing for three places.
On what is likely to be a relatively busy day at Bramall Lane at the end of a quiet month on the recruitment front, Goode will arrive as Lys Mousset heads out on loan and Daniel Jebbison is recalled from a loan spell at Burton Albion.
Mousset, still yet to complete 90 minutes in a United shirt despite signing from Bournemouth in 2019, is heading out to join Serie A side Salernitana.
The decision to recall Jebbison was made over the weekend, Paul Heckingbottom having previously been minded to leave him at League One Burton.
However, with Rhian Brewster limping out of Saturday’s 2-0 win at Peterborough United with a hamstring injury and Mousset heading out on loan, Jebbison, 18, could have a big role to play as United head into a hectic schedule.

Liverpool’s Neco Williams unlikely to be loaned out
Liverpool defender Neco Williams is unlikely to be loaned out today, The Athletic understands.
Reports have linked the right-back with a loan move to Championship side Bournemouth. However, it is understood Williams is keen to stay and fight for minutes at Liverpool with the club battling it out for silverware on multiple fronts.
There is still a lot of time left for a deadline day move to arise and an offer may yet come in for the Wales international but at this stage it is looking unlikely.

Non-league Gateshead hoping to sign Villa youngster Filip Marschall
National League North leaders Gateshead are hoping to sign young Aston Villa goalkeeper Filip Marschall on loan.
The 18-year-old England Youth international is highly rated at Villa and has attracted interest in this window.
Villa signed Swedish international Robin Olsen on loan from Roma to bolster the goalkeeper department earlier this month.
Olsen has now taken over from Jed Steer as the understudy to Emi Martinez.
If Marschall does leave as expected, Villa may look to keep 20-year-old Viljami Sinisalo around in the under-23 setup.
It will be his first loan from the club, having signed from Cambridge City in 2018.

Newcastle agree framework of a deal for Reims striker Hugo Ekitike
Newcastle United have agreed the framework of a deal for Reims striker Hugo Ekitike.
The highly-rated 19-year-old has been a target for Newcastle throughout the window, however they stepped back from negotiations a fortnight ago when Reims quoted a fee in excess of £30 million.
But, as the month has progressed, Reims’ stance has softened and The Athletic understands that a fee in excess of £20 million, with significant add-ons, has been accepted by the Ligue 1 club.
Negotiations are still ongoing for some of the potential add-ons in the deal but the fee has largely been agreed.
