Bastrop County Conservatives to host political forum Monday

Bastrop County Conservatives, a political action committee focused on electing conservative candidates to local office, is hosting a political forum Monday to introduce Republican candidates to residents.

The forum, which is open to the public, will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Casa Chapala, 1800 Walnut St. Before the forum begins, a networking hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. to allow attendees to meet one-on-one with the candidates.

GOP candidates running for state representative, county judge, county treasurer, district clerk, county commissioners Pcts. 2 and 4, and justice of the peace Pcts. 1 and 3 will be present to discuss their platforms and answer questions from the audience.

“This is a great opportunity for county residents to hear directly from approximately 20 candidates before they go to the polls,” the political committee said in a news release. “Residents should bring their family, friends and neighbors to a venue excellent for meeting their next state and county leaders.”

Lost Pines Republican Women to host candidate forum Jan. 24

The Lost Pines Republican Women group will host a GOP candidate forum on Jan. 24 at the Bastrop Convention Center, 1408 Chestnut St.

An opportunity to network will begin at 6 p.m., with the forum starting at 6:30 p.m.

All GOP candidates in the following races have confirmed they will attend: Texas comptroller, Court of Criminal Appeals Place 5, state House District 17, Bastrop County judge, county treasurer, district clerk, commissioner Pct. 2, and justice of the peace Pcts. 1 and 3. Candidates for other offices will also be in attendance, the group said.

“Members of the public are encouraged to attend to meet these candidates prior to the Feb. 14 start of early voting,” the group said in a news release. “Online preregistration, while not required, is appreciated at LostPinesRW.org.”

The Jan. 24 forum will not be a debate between the candidates, instead those seeking office will be allowed to present an opening statement and answer questions from the audience. A moderator will present the audience questions, and questions can be submitted in advance online through the Republican Women group’s website.

With time permitting, candidates will also be allowed to present closing statements.

The Lost Pines Republican Women is an affiliate of the Texas Federation of Republican Women and the National Federation of Republican Women.

Bastrop County Health Fest on Jan 25

Smithville Whole Health Partnership is hosting the Bastrop County Health Fest on Jan. 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Smithville Recreation Center, 106 Royston St. in Smithville.

This health-conscious event is free to attend and will have information available for residents about how to take better care of themselves, their families and pets.

There will also be a blood drive and several health screenings available onsite. The Smithville Lion’s Club will do vision and hearing screening for children, while the Smithville Community Clinic will screen for blood pressure. Feed the Need will provide dinner during the event at no charge.

The event will feature presentations, speakers, and classes on nutrition, fitness, physical therapy, mental health, oral hygiene, women’s wellness, recovery, home health, children’s health and wellbeing and more.

“Smithville is pleased to host a Health Fest for Bastrop County and encourages a commitment to healthy living countywide,” said Mayor Joanna Morgan, adding that with an ongoing pandemic, “everyone can learn a lot from an event like this one.”

The event is being sponsored by St. David’s Foundation; the cities of Smithville, Bastrop and Elgin; the Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce and the BEST Leadership Program.
